The train is an excellent way of traveling from Dublin to
Galway. The journey time is approximately 3 hours. Bar and
restaurant service are available.
Towns serviced along the route include Athenry, Ballinasloe,
Athlone, Tullamore and Kildare. There are no direct routes
to other cities.
Ceannt Station in
Galway City is the departure point for both buses and
trains, although private bus companies operate from a
parking lot a half-mile away. It is centrally located, but
usually busy and bustling. There is a small snack bar and
magazine stand inside the station. There is an official taxi
rank across Eyre Square, about 3 minutes' walk. However, a
few taxis often congregate outside the station when the
Dublin train is due.
See
West-on-Track for proposed North South rail link.
West On Track is a community-based campaign in the towns,
villages and cities of the West of Ireland aimed at
re-opening the Western Rail Corridor, a passenger and
freight railway line which runs from Sligo to Limerick, and
is one of the single most valuable pieces of infrastructure
in the whole island of Ireland.
